The Egmont Key Ferry transports visitors from Fort DeSoto Park, the most southern point of Pinellas County, to Egmont Key State Park. The ferry to Egmont Key runs twice each day (10:00am and 11:00am) during the regular season (Feb 17 – September 7.) It returns back to Fort DeSoto at 2:00pm and 3:00pm. This is a very inexpensive way to get out to the island and you may see quite a bit of sea life on the way. I’ve never taken the ferry, so I can’t speak to the experience personally, however just spending time on Egmont Key is worth every bit of the low price of the ferry.

Egmont Key can only be reached by boat. It is located at the mouth of Tampa Bay between Fort Desoto County Park and Anna Maria Island. If you don’t have a boat there are several excursion boats out of Saint Petersburg, Florida that offer snorkeling trips of various lengths to Egmont Key.
6/10/2010 · If you run the channel along the skyway you are protected from the islands, then the only rough water you ‘ll hit is in the main ship channel. We spend most of the time on the inland side of egmont because it is much much calmer but I’ve had my boat anchored out in front of the key and walked the beach and it was fine.
